A compression test will give you a better idea of the condition of the rings. My bike sat for 10 years in storage and I had a little oil consumption when I first started riding it. The more I rode it, the better it got and now only uses a quart of oil every 2000 miles or so. How much oil are you having to add?

That is certainly where I would start, although riding the crap out of it may be the best treatment regardless of the results. Probably won't hurt it any worse and may well help.

Interestingly checked the oil this morning and although some has dropped from exhaust port and also oiled the plugs. The levels are still correct on the dip stick. Infact they are perfect.
Valve guide oil seals are a relatively new invention. Motors today have them, but not always. A Lotus twin cam motor, for example, has none. As 89FLHTC said, you could pull them off and not cause much trouble. A little puff of smoke at startup and when taking off from a stop, and that would be about it. Certainly not enough to oil foul a plug, or even coat a plug with oil.

I would ride the devil out of it and take a long cruise for sure. If it is a stuck ring as I suspect, it could very well correct itself. Take a couple of quarts of oil and extra pair of spark plugs with you and have fun!

This and a nice shot of Lucas upper cylinder lubricant in the fuel tank !!!!!
If you can't find Marvel Mystery Oil over there look for KROIL. Dark orange can with black lettering. Follow same advice as given: remove plugs, add some KROIL, let her sit, crank her through and ride it. Personally I would add a little KROIL and crank it through a few times to get the cylinder walls coated then add some more and let it sit.

Kroil is good stuff and taste better than Seafoam!
Did a oil change and filter change today took it for a little blast.
I'm very confident the oil seals have just dried up so I won't be over complicating it over thinking g this one anymore which is all too easy to do.
Plug new plugs and leads on her made such a difference with how it runs and starts. Just get these seals fitted and manual compression releases and we will be good for the summer.
20 years old and still great to ride.
I'll try get a little wal around and start up video up of her for you guys.
Looking forward to taking down to my local and only Harley dealer it's sure to turn heads.

Evolution motor is the best.

If the bike starts and runs good without them why do you want them????
