Mine has that issue, shifter shaft wobbles in the hole that runs through the front of the primary. The older EVOs don't have a replaceable bushing there. Maybe the newer one's do? I have a 1988 and it rattles like crazy. I'm sure it's bad for things downstream to be getting the micro jackhammer treatment all the time. Whatev's..

I've just replaced the bushings and shifter shaft on my Glide, which has improved things greatly. I have previously replaced the shifter rod with a more modern s/s one, which has ball-ends, which also helped.

Use a mirror and look under the shifter where the steel spines are, mine has a set screw that can be snugged up occasionally, it's only about an 1/8" . Mine is aftermarket though, bronze bushing to the right of it.

In my case it was indeed worn teeth on the spline of both the shaft and levers. I ordered all new parts from Ronnies Harley Davidson online at a discounted cost for about $100. New shaft, levers, pegs and all bushings needed for a complete rebuild. Problem solved for another 25 years.
