ok my year engine is 87 , have cam chest cover for 84-92 , wont fit. I took push rods out. Seems to be tite on pinion gear, measured with caliper and should fit. is it possible the mechanic put late model pinion shaft inside early cases witch he said he put new cases on I believe. inside cam chest looks like shared key way for oilpump gear and pinion gear with big nut. So how can I get a cover on , and do I have to change pinion shaft and match gears? picture is on my profile..... thanks for any help ......kevin
The bush should be reamed to fit the pinion shaft where it fits the bush, preferably line-reamed and it may be binding on that. The cam end float has to be set correctly too... 3-15 thou is the range so take the shims off the back of the cam and try again. If the cover goes on you can then set the end float (with lifters removed).
The pinion gear shouldn't be proud of the crankcase to cam cover joint so if the bush has the correct clearance and is aligned correctly then the cover should go on...if pinion gear is sitting proud of the joint then you have some issues to sort out.
hello , what do you mean proud? There is no washers behind cam just that funny washer, I take cam out and it appears to hit nut on pinion gear if I take nut off I can get on without cam installed with hard taps at end
Thanks, that dude talks fast on video but very helpful, I have wrong nut and need dif cam or pinion gear... is that nut reverse thread cuz my pinion shaft is right thread? Thanks

If I recall correctly the pinion nut on my '94 FXSTC is right hand thread too.
