You can use regular ptfe tape, tighten firmly but not too much because it's no fun having to drill it out again...
Thanks buddy.

Actually.... And some of it is useless info, but for comparison only, with your Dyna:

1993 FLHS:

I bought my bike new. It came from the factory with pipe dope on all the drain plug threads. I used the same for several years, then switched to liquid Teflon thread sealant. Either work.

My primary, when fully drained takes approx 44 oz. Plus of Minus, depending on how long I let it drain. The 1993 owner's manual says 38-44 ounces. Per my FSM, it's filled 'to the bottom' of the clutch basket with bike upright and level. They have a nice picture showing it.

A 1993 FXDL/WG Primary holds 30-36 ounces, approx per my original owner's manual (Harley covered all the bikes in one owner's manual back then). I would not rely on a definitive ounce measurement, but rather go with the filled 'to the bottom' of the clutch basket method. Let it drain real good, and make a note of how many ounces it takes to fill it to spec.

While you're in there it's a good time to also adjust the clutch...

My transmission takes ~24 ounces. Depending on how long I let it drain. Own's manual says 20-24 ounces. Trans fluid is also checked with the bike 'upright and level'. You may find that putting a stripe of dark magic marker on the dip stick will make it easier to see the gear oil (if you use a somewhat clear oil).

A 1993 FXDL/WG holds 24 ounces trans oil/lube/fluid, approx per my original owner's manual.

While your 'under there' MAW (might as well) change the engine oil. My bike takes 4 quarts w/filter. Your's is 3 quarts w/filter However, the engine oil is checked with the bike on the Jiffy Stand. Same info with the drain plug. Check the o-ring!

BTW: A 1993 FXDL/WG fuel tank has a TOTAL capacity of 4.9 gallons, with 1.1 gallons reserve. If you are running the OEM petcock.

Hey don't tighten that screw until it's tight or you'll be taking the primary cover off to get the screw out. It never bottoms out there's nothing it seats against. You countersink it slightly then stop. I have a 98 should be the same. You'll know if it leaks it will leave a nice puddle for you. Also don't go by volume go by level of fluid. Stand it up and fill it to the bottom of the basket as described. Too full and you'll have clutch trouble

Bud your a legend. Really appreciate this post. Thank you.

Now having never done this before when you say oil filled to the bottom of the clutch basket is that the grooved thing? Lol sorry. Just want to make sure I put the correct level in it.

Engine oil I have just done

Transmission I will do soon.

Should I replace the o ring in my Derby cover?

See post #9 in the above link/thread. There is a small pic to click on that shows the correct level with bike standing straight up. Use 10-40 or 15w-40 diesel oil. If using 10-40, make sure it is off road like atv or motorcycle oil. The newer automotive oils have higher amounts of moly in it which could cause clutch slippage. Not saying it will, just that it could.

A gallon or rotella 15-40 is so cheap and easy to get, might as well go for that.

The engine oil drain plug is the one that is towards the front of the bike on the oil pan. The rear plug on the pan is for trans fluid. Both are 3/4 inch socket.

I get wix oil filters at orielly's #51348. It is the smaller filter, the 51516 is larger but it touches my stator plug so I just stay with the 51348. People will tell you your motorcycle will explode if you don't use Harley brand or xxxx brand filter. Been using the 51348 on my Evo Harleys since 1987 and no explosions yet. Even adapted one to my triumph and no issues there either. I like Valvoline racing conventional 20w-50 (again at orielly).

Get your 80-90 or 75-140 gear lube there as well. Once stop shopping. YD
