The stock o-ring is the rubber one that goes into the groove in the derby cover. The one you got is the gasket that goes between the derby cover and the primary cover. Those are common with aftermarket covers.
Personally, unless your cover was leaking, it's not worth the bother. But since you already have it, it won't hurt anything.
Everything on your bike is 20 years old. If you are going to start replacing stuff just because of that, where are you going to stop?
Thanks bud.
Yeah I hear ya about replacing lots of stuff. It's just this bike has lots of sentimental meaning / value to me and I don't mind replacing the things that don't cost a fortune. I hope that I can use it for many years and even pass it down to my kids if / when i have then
I think for us guys In The U.K. Harley's a probably a little more special than to you guys in the u.s lol.
Just for information, the primary drain plug (and the transmission drain plug on the Softail) are a 1/8-27 NPT (national pipe taper) thread. That is, the thread is a taper thread that locks when it's tight. I use Hylomar on mine to seal, and tighten them just a bit more than finger tight. Never had one come loose or leak, but I've had a devil of a time getting them loose when an over zealous mechanic over tightened them once.
I hope that I can use it for many years and even pass it down to my kids if / when i have then
I hear you there. I keep a journal that details everything I do to my bike. It is written "to" my 7yo grandson who seems to have an affinity for this bike and who I hope takes it up as his own some day.
