Personally I would go for any of them after 87. The 39mm forks started that year and its easier to find suspension parts. I just recently picked up a 92 FXRS that Im getting into working order after a bunch of people have screwed it up. It already had apes and forwards but I would have put them on anyway. They do live up to their rep as a corner burner, lots of fun! Now to coax some ponies out of the old evo and all will be good. Id look for good tins, replacement tanks cost a fortune! Im looking for one now and considering swapping to bagger tank to keep the costs down.

Just sold my 93 FXRS-Conv, (I was original owner, but divorce is an ugly thing), and they are getting hard to find, in any original state. Mine was pretty close to stock with some performance upgrades (engine) but I would say that most FXRs have been "butchered" over the years as this model was NOT popular in the day for looks, as the softails garnered the majority of the attention. Early Shovel models were a transition model IMHO a combination of old school (motor) and new school (frame) and were not quite the same as the EVO models. The CVO versions were rumoured to be a way to clear out HD inventory of FXR frames to make way for the Dyna ( a factory rumour) and the owners often want top $$$ because it has CVO relation but any other FXR is as good again IMHO. Walk away from any frame or neck mods, anything cut up. later years should be a good choice. Recently saw HA owned FXRT with some modern touches that was so nice it could put newer models to shame, proof they can be made new again. Good Luck on your search. If I can be of any help just PM me.

Cheers

Is there anything from the moco that actually calls the 2, 3 or 4 a 'cvo'?
