Right then, EVO engine on the bench with an i.d. that starts and ends with a star (not the dotted ones, it's a proper 5-point star), then 5 letters and 5 numbers.
Am I right in thinking these then are S&S cases or...?
S&S stuff has 'S&S' displayed on it in a prominent position! They are not shy at displaying their brand. My '08 S&S 107" Evo engine has branding at the base of the rear cylinder on the primary side, as big as my thumb-print, and a 'dotty' number and stars at the base of the front cylinder.

70-up shovelheads all had the VIN derivative on the the front of the right case...except for 1984.
In 84 they moved it back to the left case.
All 84 motors...shovel or evo... had 4 stars on the front of the right case...where the vin had been since 70...and the number on the left case started and ended with a star.
