Default Check Engine Light

So this morning on my 96 Ultra Classic (FLHTCUI) my check engine light came on (well at least what I assume is the CE light, red light to the right of the Fuel Indicator Amber light on tach) as I was going down my drive way, so me thinking it was an oil light for some reason turned around and went back up the drive way added some oil. Turns out it was 1/2 qt low. Started up no light, took off rode about a mile light went on and off a few times. So I turned around took it home. During the mile back home it would come on for a few seconds at a time an go off.

I didn't have time to look at it any further this morning, I was already running late for work at this point.

Can any one offer any suggestions of where to start looking to figure out what is going on?? I've been looking though the service manual and cant find what could cause a check engine light.

Bike is 96 Ultra, with 25k miles.

Your manual doesn't tell you how to check trouble codes???

Not that I have been able to find.

1984 - 1998
Service Manual
FLH/FLT/FXR Evolution

====EDIT

Found it. I'll try when I get home in a bit.

1995 - 1996 Harley EFI's did not have a flashable ECM, so they could not get the trouble codes from the idiot lamp like you can in 1997-on.

You may want to read this thread, specifically post 7.

I pulled the codes from my 96 just like it showed in the manual.

On for 3 sec 1 sec after fuel pump goes off x 2

Threw 14 and 16
Engine Temp and Battery voltage.

My bike had only been running for less then 5-8 minutes before the light came on so it shouldn't have been any where near over heated.

My battery while running with no accessories running other then lights according to bolt meter is kicking out 12-13v

I'm clearing the codes by disconnecting the meg terminal to see if they throw again.

So I cleared the codes, and took it for about a 5-7 minute ride, no CE light yesterday. Then this morning, about the same place as yesterday the light is back on. Going to pull the codes again when I get home.

I guess I need to replace the battery and Engine Temp Sensor, hopefully it isn't a stator issue causing the battery voltage code.

Don't guess!!!!!
Grab a multi meter and go through the charging system sticky to make sure your battery and charging system is good before you just grab your wallet and start spending money!!!!

I believe you should be running 14.2 volts at 1500 RPM or so.

ETS is s common problem. Search for user "im" in this forum. He is brilliant with first generation MM diagnosis.
Bagger1997 knows his stuff too.
