I have oil leaking out of the rocker arm on the front head as well as the bottom of the derby cover. There is also a lot of oil collecting on the swing arm left side of the motorcycle. Suggestions? 1996 wide glide. Any help is appreciated. Thank you
It's collecting on the left cause that's the side the bike leans on its kickstand. Some new gaskets will probably fix both problems. Bad gaskets r the number one cause for Harley leaks
I'll start by saying that an oil leak on an EVO is not unusual nor is it lethal. After all, they are at least 17-18 years old. I'm guessing that the leak at the front cylinder is coming from the rocker box, not the rocker arm. You will need to replace the rocker box gaskets. We need a more accurate location of the other leak. The derby cover is the round one with three bolts. Replacing the gasket there should seal it. However if you are referring to the outer primary cover, its gasket can be a leaker but sometimes the real problem is the mainshaft seal behind the inner primary cover. Either way, riding will blow leaking oil back and make a mess. Good luck.
Clean both areas well and continue to ride. No harm is going to fall! It should be easy to identify and confirm where the leak on the front head is actually coming from.
As Beemervet points out, the primary leak is more of a challenge. If oil is coming down the back of the inner primary casing, it is most probably an oil seal. Also check the transmission casing, behind the front pulley. There is a seal in the back of the primary and another in the transmission housing. Replacing either of those involves removing the entire primary to get at, something I personally leave to an indy. If there is no oil behind the primary, the gasket behind the primary cover is the most likely candidate.
