Default Oil pump trouble

I had a sheared woodruff key on oil Pump drive shaft at drive gear below pinion shaft. Replaced and am altogether again trying to prime Pump. I have external hose to feed port to watch oil go down in external oil reservoir. I have plenty air pressure at return port on case, just beside oil pressure port but no oil. Am I good are is this pushrods tappet created pressure? Have had much work on bike lately I have been lucky. Hopefully I will see some of you for Texas evo meet!

Pull the plugs out and crank it until the light goes out.

Cant tell which one u are referring to one has a spring and cylinder and the other has spring and ball. In the past I would attach outside source of oil above engine but I installed new Pump fitting and stainless lines making it a PITA to use old method. Someone familiar with sifton pumps?

On another note Granite State Harley took down their Online parts diagrams for all Harley's and now I do not have a similar resource. Can someone PM me a current online source? Don't want big brother to strike info so please pm.

Dr. Hess,
Will pulling the plugs and cranking the engine harm the ignition? I have seen comments to that effect.

No. There's lots of comments on the internet. If you really feel worried about it, then put the spark plugs in the end of the wires and lay the plugs on the motor somewhere, or put alligator clips on the plugs to ground them.

thanks for info. Turns out I had trash in return gears and ill-fitting supply line causing issues. Now to set carb right after shaving another 20 thousandths off of heads. She is blowing carb to manifold gasket off on almost every start. Need to clear slow jet just in case of build-up.

If the pump is not primed, you can crank it until the cows come home and the light will still be on.

The inlet side of the pump is gravity fed, and until that pump is full of oil the pressure is not going to come up.

The check ball should be removed, and oil allowed to flow from the tank into the pump, or just pour some oil into the pump and reinstall the ball, spring and cap.
