I suspect Ripsaw is saying there is no difference between the various models, as far as their charging systems is concerned. Softails don't have a different charging system, to offset having their battery surrounded by the oil tank, which I agree with.

If that is true then the tech I spoke to at Cycle Electric lied to me when I called them about which one to get (I was looking for the biggest I could get) for my bike.
I was told that because of the heat the softail couldn't use as big a charging system as the baggers.

I've avoided commenting earlier in this thread because I don't believe there is any difference - the components involved across the big twins are identical! Cycle Electric may well recommend not using the higher output components they sell.

FWIW I've never experienced this on my bikes but I have had car batteries ruined by excessive heat. Granted not often (only about 5 or 6 times over the last 30 years) but it does happen.
I have no idea if there is any correlation between bike batteries and car batteries or if comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges but between what I was told by Cycle Electric and my experience with heat killing car batteries I believed what they told me.
My guess is the OEM parts are the same do to the lower charging amps where as the CE system is a higher amp so the use different parts....So your both right.

Your explanation is correct. As batteries heat up their resistance to charging increases. If the amps are too high this will only exacerbate the heat problem and could result in damage to the battery and the charging system itself. A fact that has been known for decades. Batteries get hot just charging.
Just because the oem parts don't vary doesn't mean that cycle electric doesn't think it's a good idea to take in to mind the heat of the battery during charging. Most people seem to consider the cycle electric parts to be an upgrade over oem.
