I thought it was the pawl.... and today the lever finally went floppy on me. I babied it home and ordered the baker pawl along with some progressive front fork springs. I figured might as well while it's down.
The thing that sucks is I now have two bikes down and nothing to ride. The dyna is awaiting its heads from the porter
Luckily this is my short week upcoming so I only work two days and can tear it down. Oh well. At least I got home. And I will take some pictures through the process

Yea, been there. It does suck. You'll be back in no time, good thing it's still only spring....
Jason, I didn't know you had the Ultima 6. The spring breakage is common with these trans... I also have the Ultima 6 and went through the same thing with the spring breakage and tried the Baker pawl and spring. It doesn't work.. The Ultima is not the same as the OEM 5 speed shift pawl. The Baker pawl and spring is made for the OEM 5 speed.... I did a lot of research and found that the spring is the same but the length of the pawl is longer in the Ultima.....
So what I did was, i purchased the the 2 springs and seal from Jireh and I took a file to round the edges of the shift pawl where the spring made contact so it wouldn't cut into the spring and snap it again.... That was a couple of years ago now and still no problems.....

Did you physically try the baker pawl in that trans? (Not being sarcastic)
I have researched this before when I thought it was the pawl. This is what I found out in combination with the Ultima. The baker shifter pawl is about the same as the five speed one in evo's. Part 556-56c uses the same shift shaft bushing length at the one that is in the ultima case. The problem lies in throw length of the baker contacting the case and not allowing a full travel when up shifting and also the anit overshift portion needs to be clearenced. See attached

What year is your trans.? Mine is up to 99. All I know is I couldn't get it adjusted properly and could not get it to shift. Don't remember if it was upshift or down... So I sent it back....
I was not aware of modifications. Good luck... Hope it works out....
Mine is up to 99 too but like I said the Ultima uses the newer style roller detent drum kind of like when you use a twincam pawl with a twincam drum (5 speed ofcourse) which is why I am hoping the above mention corrections will work. If not I am going to band aid it I guess
