Default Highway Pegs slipping???

Hi Guys,

This is (I think) an old problem - I have a set of Highway Pegs (Kuryakyn) attached to the vertical part of a Kuryakyn Crash Bar. The issue is the "clamp" that secures the pegs to the bar is continually coming loose to the point where the pegs flop around.

I have used electrical tape around the bar beneath the "clamp" but that hasn't stopped the loosening issue. I tried Duck Tape also without success and yes, the clamps were tightened as much as humanly possible.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can secure the pegs to the bars and ensure they remain tight and in place? Having to continually adjust and tighten them is becoming a pain in the rear

Thanks for any help.

Might try cutting some strips from an aluminum can and shimming the clamps with them.

Maybe drill and tap for a screw in an inconspicuous spot, or place stair grip tape under clamps.

Thanks gents,

Omaha - if I am understanding you correctly, I don't think shimming the clamps will help. The clamps are the right size for the crash bar and are done up very tightly.

It seems as though the clamps, no matter how tight I get them, don't want to "grip and hold onto the bar" they are being tightened to and eventually slip around, if that makes more sense.

apples402 -

what is stair grip tape, never heard of it?

Drywall sanding screen cut into a strip to fit then clamp the peg over it. Same idea as the stairway grip tape but will have abrasive grip to both sides. Works good for holding handlebars so should work great for the pegs to. Yd

The only bike I have with highway pegs is our Sporty. I installed frame mounted ones, partly to get a range of adjustment fore and aft, but also to avoid that problem. Sounds as if you are suffering from the 'apes' problem, of too much leverage for the clamps, in which case drilling and adding a locking key of some sort, as apples suggests, is the way to go.

I had the same problem when I tried Kuryakyn pegs.

I replaced them with Harley pegs and mounts.
No problems since.

That was the last time I bought anything made by Kuryakyn.

One would think knurling of the inside of the clamp would be the way to go..... You know like what the handlebar clamps...

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I'll give the drywall or carpet tape ago first and see if that solves the problem. Failing that, I might have to bite the bullet and bolt them in place permanently.

Texashillcountry, what seems to be the be difference between the Kuryakyn mount and the HD mounts that make the HD mounts that much better? I am asking as the cost of the HD adjustable mounting kit is $119 plus tax which seems a little high (yeah I know HD) for just a mount.

IIRC the Harley mounts had grooves to hold the peg mount.
Like teeth on both sides that once bolted down there was no chance of slipping.

I do remember for sure noticing that there was a big difference between the two.

As for how much they cost all I can say is normally you get what you pay for.
