I have a 89 fxr 1340 evo and have just doen a oil service on her , ie change oil and filter etc , started her up and my oil light stays on any ideas as to why ?
she runs ok and sounds like she did before oil change
Are you sure there is oil pressure? If so, check the sender. Take the wire off and see if the light goes out. If it doesn't then your wire is grounded somewhere. If it does AND YOU'RE SURE YOU HAVE PRESSURE, then the sender is bad. But if you've just been mucking around there, chances are you caused the problem, not the sender coincidentally going bad at the same time. Yeah, it can happen, but pretty rare.
You didn't forget to add oil, right? (You don't want to know the story of why that comes to mind.)
I'm with the Dr in that odds are you somehow dislodged something and this is just an electrical glitch. The switch is the 'normally closed' type. The pressure causes it to open, breaking the circuit and turning off the light.
1) With the motor off and the wire off the switch, you should have continuity (zero Ohms) between the terminal on top of the switch and ground.
2) With the motor on, you should have an open circuit (infinite Ohms) between the switch terminal and ground.
If you do, then you not only know you have pressure, you know the switch is good. That means that the wire from the bulb to the switch is grounding somewhere.
If you don't...if it stays at zero... it might be that you really don't have any pressure, but if the motor (particularly the lifters) sounds good, then something weird is happening. As Hess said, it would be ridiculously bad luck to have the switch fail at this exact time, but not impossible. I suppose it's also possible that the oil pump somehow lost it's prime, but that's hard to imagine.
My bet is on a faulty switch. I had that happen on an iron head sporty and just about **** my pants. It happened right after I rebuilt the top end. A small piece of gasket or some crap plugged the switch. From that point on I run a gauge.
Thanks for all the replies , i disconected the switch and the light went out , i noticed a crack in the rubber casing around the out side so have orderd a new switch , how do i check if i have oil pressure ? i did completely remove all old oil and replace with new as awell as the filter , i started her and left her running for 10 mins and light still stayed on .
Like suggested, pull the pressure sensor wire and see if the light goes out.
Check it with a OHM meter for continuity with the bike running. If it's closed (you have continuity to ground), pull the switch and clean it or replace it.

Remove the cap for the check ball at oil pump, when oil rises up in there, replace the cap. It may be air bound if you removed the oil line for some reason.

If it ran for 10 min without elf destructing, more than likely but not guaranteed its a faulty sensor. Lots of other good advise from other posters here too.
