Nice pics,am I seeing crank issues there ? What was going on with her before the teardown ?
I think so, jammed right up against the cases. It went to local Harley Dealer shop for new starter install..they ols starter used to hammer really hard when starting....ended up adding "needing" a new rotor, new stator and several other issues all in the primary. After 4 weeks, I went to pick it up...on the first start it hammered just like before. They heard it and kept it another week. They retarded the timing a bit to solve the issue..On my first ride, went 185 miles...on return trip it locked up on the highway at 70. I took it back to the HD shop..they said "not our fault you musta had a rod knocking"..I asked why they did not hear it in the 5 weeks that they had it. The said "well you do have those loud pipes...." HMMMMM Mine must have been the first bike with loud pipes that they had worked on LOL
Got her torn down here are updated pics. Sorry about the bad lighting
Any Ideas what may have caused this?
Thanks!
Sorry about the lighting. Any ideas what may have caused this and caused the motor to lock up?
Thanks for any help
Not an expert, but rod bearing totally shot? Constant hammering from said shot bearing? Oil pump worked, right? Man. That's one's pretty bad. Fixable, of course, but you'd have to really work at that.
It has to do with the oil port in the crank pin. Also has to do with hard riding, the oem crank pin doesn't like getting the **** beat out of it. I know cause same happened to mine but with 97/96 tq/hp...
Flush all your oil lines and blow out all oiling ports... Also tear apart the oil pump..
Now is the perfect time for an S&S 96" Stroker.....

Dang, I hoped it would!! LOL
As far as I knew all was working well, it had just came from the shop as mentioned and all fluids where supposed to have been changed. I would love to rebuild, but thought at this point only a new engine was plausible. I was unsure how fixable this was with the amount of damage to the cases. As to the bearing, neighbor pressed it out of the cases..sadly he dropped the case, so when I saw it the bearing where trashed, but unsure if that was from him dropping the case.
