when a guy would come along from another place, and the blue silicone was hanging out of everything, we would take it out with him standing next to the bike

I've checked that screen about once in the last 30 years. Checked it regularly for the first year or so, then when I never saw a single spec of anything, I stopped. Now, on a dry clutch and "best wishes" filtered bike, like a shovel, you'll get the occasional piece of clutch plate crud in there.

Personally I'd be more concerned with the abrasive grit from whatever you were cutting with getting into the motor. Might want to change your oil a couple of times before you go tearing down the road.
.."a big screw driver" ? They make a removal tool for that cap. It's called a drag link socket. I'm cheap so I made mine.
