Oh, and sailors would also use the Red Hand for tooth fillings that came out. Loose a filling? Mix up some Red Hand, put it in the hole. Stories were that dentist would curse them for burning up their bits trying to get the stuff out to put a proper filling in. I remember one AB standing watch said he had one filling of Red Hand still. "I need to get that replaced one of these days." It had been in there a couple years.
My favorite goo is aircraft fuel tank sealant. It's been sealing fuel systems, used as panel faying sealant and for sealing transparencies for several decades. I buy the kits and mix "flightline style" by turning the impeller shaft with visegrips while stroking up and down.
Every mechanic should try a kit. It impervious to gasoline, diesel, hydraulic fluid etc and has OUTSTANDING wetting compared to RTVs. You can find expired but perfectly usable kits on Ebay sometimes. I've sealed the timing gear cover on a GM diesel with it because that's all we had when TDY. I don't envy the mechanic who has to pry it off.
