Default swap EVO 1991 flhtc engine into 1986 softtail custom

Hi,

I have an EVO out of a 1991 FLHTC and wondering what would need to be modified to drop it into a 1986 softtail custom.

Someone mentioned that the inner and out primary need to be changed?

Correct, flh has a short primary, softail has a long primary. The oil routing system is different also I believe. Not sure if the transmission plates are different, I would assume so since they are positioned diffently.

With that being said, if you have an 86 softail with say a blown motor and everything else is good, it should all bolt up. In 86, the motor was definitely a bottom breather, not sure about the 91. Other than the possible breather, the block itself is the same, just everything else that is different. As far as I know the motor mounts are the same, should be 2 in front, 2 in back, and the mount up top.

‘91 was still a bottom breather. Motor should bolt right in, but not the primary or transmission. The rubber mounted drivetrain was different. The primary was shorter and the transmission case carried the swingarm on the touring bikes.

How does the oil filter bracket work?

My bagger has the oil filter down under the swingarm. Softails have the bracket on the front of the engine.

Can a bagger motor accept that bracket? I've never looked, but I don't think my right case has the mounting holes that would be required.

That's true but I think all he is doing is swapping motors.
If that's the case can't he just unbolt the blown motor and bolt in the bagger motor?

I just looked them up and both the 91 bagger and the 89 softail use the same cases.

The oil filter mount on the early Softails is on the front downtube (the best setup the factory ever used).

Engine is a direct swap.

Mounted to the left peg mount...mine had cracked and been brazed twice when I obtained it...not on my list of "best"...obsolete from harley...v-twin makes a repro.

I should have said "On some of the early Softails".

I think the mounting boss welded to the frame downtube may have started when they started making a Softail model with footboards.
