Start with checking the battery cable connections and all the grounds in particular, contacts in the solenoid are welding themselves together, hence the run on problem. This occurs when the starter is drawing more amperage than the system was designed for, low battery and bad connection are the two biggest problems for this. Starter armature and worn brush's are the next in line.

Rebuild the contacts in the starter, once they pit out it'll keep doing it.

Did this happen after a bike washing?
Did you replace any components after this incident?

Just trying to get more information for troubleshooting next time.
By the time I got screwdriver to remove seat & disconnect battery. it was over.
Couple of years old, All ***** starter, new hot & ground wires made by me out of 2 AWG welding cable with copper terminal lugs crimped on.
I also sanded paint off metal where cables grounded on fender & frame & used Star washers when grounding lugs to metal. Used Dielectric grease to prevent bare metal from rusting to finish it off.
Had not washed the bike & have not replaced anything on starter , yet.
When I engaged the external starter button on starter is when it stuck.
Pulled key out, but that did nothing.
Have not rode my bike , unfortunately, the last couple of years, but just bought a ThunderHeader for it, so getting ready for riding weather. . I need to take starter off & inspect it. Have a feeling , the problem is in the solenoid.
I'll let ya know when I pull it.

Ride Safe,
Harold

Doesn't mean a thing, seem many year or two old starters go belly up particularly the aftermarket ones. Got a couple crates loaded with hashed Spyke evo units in my shed.
