I was told 50k was expected lifter life ... in my case the bad roller got bound up in a position that allowed the engine to run quiet and with no problems ... the hammering starting once the roller spun to a bad position ... I have no idea how long the roller was going bad ...
had to clean everything out and replaced cam and cam bearing and seals ... actually did a complete engine rebuild while doing it ... that was two years ago, all good since then ... but I will start checking them around 30k
