Why are there so many "Chicken Littles" running around warning that you need to replace lifters and blocks in these Evo's every 35,000 to 40,000 miles? We just replaced the cam bearing in my '93 at just over 49,000 miles and everything in the cam chest looked great. Even the bearing looked almost like new. I used to get a lot more than 50,000 miles out of the lifters and blocks in my Shovelhead. I'm just askin'? If you're getting premature wear maybe the 20-50w oil most guys run is too thin.
I can't speak for everyone but, I had lifter wheel loose it's bearings on my '93 Ultra at 49, 925 miles. It munched up the bearings and sent them throughout the motor. All it took for this to happen was a 2 block long ride from my house at 25 mph. It ruined the motor and I had to do a reman deal to get it back on the road. A set of lifters would have been alot cheaper, easier, and faster to replace then the motor was.,,,

I believe those were the years of the service bulletins for the 25000 mile service limit on the OEM lifters.... 92 era... Especially if you went to a more aggressive cam....
Surprisingly it was nice and quite and came on all at once ... sounded like a little guy in there with a big hammer trying to get out ... had 146k on the lifters when it happened ... I was told that was 3x's the expected life of a lifter

Maybe because I had the front exhaust lifter shed the needles in the roller at 46,000 miles and it cost me the smoothest, quietest and best running engines of the three I've had in this bike. That's why! Yes, I was running the stock cam.
I'm just trying to spare others the grief I experienced. Yes, the engine I have now runs great, but it's much noisier and vibrates much more than the one I replaced.

if it vibrates that bad ...have you tried retarding the timing 2-4 degree's ...???.... it will smooth it out ....!!! what your are hearing is pinging ...from too much timing !!! some one installed the timing plate too advanced when they installed the replacement motor ...
we have over 65,000 hard miles on the Evo here ...we run heavy oils and will not leave out until the engine is warmed up ...you must let the oil heat up too ...before gas'n on it hard !!

That's what I'm sayin'. That's a lot more that 35,000 miles.
