Pretty sure that one is obsolete...fixing it may be a problem as far as replacement parts...

if you want a kick only bike...you have to pay...either for a quality kit...or knee surgery...your call....

What kind if primary do you have? An electric start is probably cheaper than a quality kicker...

Yeah looks like one those late 80's kits. The stub shaft in those were junk.

Hurt less than a blown knee will, good luck.

FWIW, it's my opinion that when it comes to something that's more or less a one-time purchase that will be with you forever, the old saying "Buy the best and you only cry once" is the way to go.

I don't always live up to that myself.

There have been occasions where I thought I was nuts for spending what I did. I can't think of a single case where, after time, I didn't come to appreciate those decisions.

There have been occasions where I cut corners to save some $$$$. Some of those work out, most don't. That's where the regrets are.

You've got what looks like a beautiful project going there. Don't cut corners.

^^ I agree with all of the "get the best" posts... But, I understand ya gotta live with what ya gots.
Tip; Learned when we had a shop... When starting an Unknown Bike with a kicker...I have learned to be very careful getting "on stroke" then no Jumping and Kicking... Never Unload the Lever... ever... Just push it thru... If it is Gonna Start... It will... Don't need alot of Effort at all just roll 'er over... again... Never unloading the Lever before pushing it thru...
My $0.02... FWIW
Good Luck

Kicking a stock Evo isn't easy. Especially if it has the "federal" cam. Having a "high lift/ long duration" cam might be easier as the duration length may not create compression until later in the stroke. Unless, of course, it has a 10.5:1 piston, then all bets are off.
Tip~ When you kick, do not extend your leg to the point of locking your knee. If it "kicks back" with your knee locked, that may cause pain (and surgery to fix.)

I never had no Problems with any Big Twin Kick Starting... Load the Lever, and Drop yer Hip. I do go just under 200lbs tho.
Big Sportsters can be a Challenge.. Something about the gear ratio of the starter gearset, maybe.
Of Note [maybe]... I cannot really start a kick Harley with my left leg, and I cannot kick any bike bigger than a 250 dirtbike, straddling it!!!
Left knee on the seat...load the lever On Stroke... drop yer hip...let 'er rip tater chip
