Default M6 chain tensioner question

When I installed the new primary chain and M6 auto tensioner instructions said to set initial spacing at .625", with 2 shins I was right at .624 and called it good. What I'm noticing is the bike won't drop into neutral while running but will when turned off. I've readjusted the clutch cable with no luck.
I'm thinking I need to remove a shim and loosen up the primary chain. Can any of you that have gone this route give me some advice?
This is for my '96 Road King. Thanks!

Your primary chain may have a tight spot (most of them do). Carefully turn the primary over until you find that and set your M6 spacing at that point. After a while the chain may well bed in and you find you need to reset it.

When I bought mine it said to set it at 1/2" free play.

New chains don't generally have tight spots.

I wouldn't use a spring if it was Free... But, I been adjusting chains for a very long time... If you look at a Performance Harley, No Springs... control yes... but Not spring loaded...Kinda like Wavy Washers in Shovelhead Rockers to me.....

Thanks for the replies. Looks like I'm opening the cover again and having another go at it.

From what I recall, I believe it was 5/8” at the bottom gap from the shim to bottom of the shoe.Mines been in for almost 40k w/o a problem. May need to go over the clutch adjustment ? Also check your throw out bearing?

Yes you are correct 5/8" is .625. I'm going to open it up and check it all out again. Something's off as it was working fine before I took it all down. Thanks.

I agree, tried the M-6 years ago on my old FXR,I ride pretty hard and it never worked well for me riding aggressively, just easy riding it was fine.
I ended up going back to a standard shoe after monkeying around trying to find a happy place in the adjustment on the M-6.
Waste of money IMO.

EVO's have a manual primary chain adjuster and some people want to convert it to an automatic (spring) adjustment system.
Twin Cam's have an automatic primary chain adjuster and some people want to convert it to a manual adjustment system.
You can't please everyone

Kept my manual adjustment system in my EVO
Installed a manual adjustment system (Baker) in my Twin Cam.
Just wish I had an inspection cover in my outer primary cover on the Twin Cam!

I kept my manual adjustment as well.....don’t need anything automatic there as it’s not like it needs much adjusting anyways. I did buy one of those Corbin EZ-Fill inspection covers where you don’t have to remove any cover to change primary fluid.

Harley deleting the inspection cover.....yea I never understood that. Now they can’t sell any accessory cover there.
