Default Speedo

Anyone know how the speedometer cable disconnects from the drive on the front axle? 98 FLHTCUI. Ronnies shows it as separate part. Thanks. Ken

Yea- on my 92 you disconnect at the speedo - then just turn the whole cable counterclockwise to unscrew from the axle assy. If its too tight - put pliers or vice grip on the metal part of the cable at the axle and unscrew.

Same way my 1998 Ultra was before I converted to electronic speedometer.

Figured it out. After checking pretty much everything related to the problem, finally laid down looking closely at the drive unit.

The 90 degree tang that hooks into the hole on the rotor had sheared off. There was enough material left on the vertical piece to drive down into the hole with a 1/8" nailset. We'll see how long it lasts, I hope as long as the original did.

Went out on me heading home from a 300 mile rt ride to the Talamina Byway in OK, somewhere in ARK. 75 *, great riding. Ken

As an aside I found that a tv aerial cable rubber boot is a good fit, to weather-proof where the outer and drive join. My first drive unit seized solid due to corrosion inside.

A straight spark plug wire boot works well also...YD

The boot appears to still be in good shape after all these years, remarkably.

There should be a teeny, tiny slotted screw near the bottom of the tube that the cable goes into. Not easy to find but it's there. Remove it and the cable will come out. If you don't you'll ruin the cable housing and possibly the the drive ripping things apart.
