Default I'm sure it's been covered, however........

My 89 FLTCU is on the stand this winter for all I can get done to it. If riding season comes before I finish, then I will ride it as I got it to....among things to do is to change the lifters and I will of course do adjustable pushrods too.....If I opt for renewing the cam I hear good things about EV13 and EV23.....assuming much touring and a twisty road environment with heavy grades, which of these two will give the best overall improvements? Understanding that more torque in more places is always good, although whatever horsepower these cams can unleash is not unwelcome. I would like to keep my fuel economy....it's 35 to 42mpg on stock stuff.....I doubt that I can improve it much other than to not twist too far back on the throttle! I know I should put a better breather in if I should dig that deep and I will do that.

Why of course change the pushrods to adjustable?
Neither the 13 (which is better than the 27 for your bike) nor the 27 need them.
All that does is add a point of possible failure if you don't get the jam nut tight enough. BTDT

i would do adjustable so as not to pull the heads if it’s not needed...if they need some service though that will change. And if neither cam is beneficial for my ways of riding I’ll leave well enough and just do new lifters for I have some tasty hylift Johnson pieces and I’m sure I need those anyhoo...I don’t think my breather is faulty so won’t bother it unless I do go digging into the cam chest and if the ev13 is a suitable upgrade with little downside I’ll do it...not too spendy given some things which certainly are!

You don't need to pull the heads to change the pushrod tubes.
You do have to pull the rocker boxes but that's dead easy on a bagger.
The 13 is much better than the OEM cam but make sure if you change the cam change the cam bearing.

If you spend most of the time between 2-3000rpms definitely the 13 is your choice. Will pull nicely to 4500. The 27 comes on after 25-2600.

Yep right around 3000 I don’t think I’ve owned any bike that didn’t burble around right about there🙂 and I do need strong bottom end torque or at least not less than I’ve got.

86glider is right. I do most of my riding in that 2-3000rpm range and put an EV-13 in my '97 Fatboy a couple years ago. Kept the stock pushrods and went with Johnson Hylift lifters.

It's been a great change.

I had a Woods W6 (similar to the EV27) in my '89 for some years; it was noisy and the boost was from about 3000 on up. At 3500 - 4000 it really came into its own, but how oftern do you hit those RPMs? A catastrophic lifter failure damaged the cam, so when putting it back together I switched to an EV13. Big improvement -- valve train noise is minimal, and the power boost from the cam comes on best between 2000 - 3500 RPM -- a much more 'rideable' range. I can highly recommend this cam for a heavy, slightly modified Ultra. Mine has shaved heads, Wood CV carb, free flowing air cleaner, Dynatek ignition, S&S rockers and valve springs, true dual exhaust, so nothing crazy, just the usual mods. I wish I had gotten the EV13 years ago.
