If you received a 92 and earlier Gasket I'm curious if they also sent you a 92 down cam cover. I believe the oil ports in the 2 covers are a little different, however the way the oiling system is set up you should get oil to the top end first and once that pressure is satisfied the check valve allows oil to the pinion shaft bushing and connecting Rod bearings. I don't think the gasket is going to allow less oil throughout the system because even though it has the extra oil port hole next to where the breather setup is, the cam cover should still prevent any oil loss providing it's for the proper year, 93 up. Also I was always told that whenever replacing the cam cover you need to disassemble the case to check that the bore for the pinion shaft properly lines up with the cases (checking line bore). Also As far as I know whenever a new cover or cam bushing is replaced you need to rheem the cam bushing for the proper clearance for the cam.
At this point I would still get the proper gasket and reinstall the original cam cover (get it powder coated if you want) and see if your noise goes away.. As it is t's a crap shoot cause I can't see all the parts.. But I think it would be wise to return to original.
Do you have any idea if there are any modifications to the motor. Cam, lifters, pushrods, head work, anything? I can hear some valve train noise at idle.. Does it go away above 2000 rpm?
I changed the cam about 4 years ago,i put a EV-27 cam in it,stock lifters, rockers and pushrods, never touched the engine its got 15k miles on it,only thing i did from 6 months ago was replace the nose cone with an NOS harley one for nightrains and i replaced the breather gear to a metal one, thats all i did,put it back together, fired it up and heard the noise
Well to me it sounded like the noise was down in the bottom and I would think that seeing you have original lifters it's very possible that there is an issue there. It didn't sound like it was up top to me. Confirm your oil light does work and if it goes out you should have sufficient oil pressure to switch operates at 5 psi.. I have heard lifters not fully pumping up after sitting. It's possible you might need a new set.. I know a lot of guys go to the Johnson Hi-lifts..
