Default Brake Broke

Here's a new one.

(1990 FLHTC)

Coming back from lunch, not more than a mile from the shop, stopped at a light. Get a green and go to take off, and get a very odd thunk/lurch kind of thing.

Got her rolling. Everything seems fine, until I pull into the parking lot at the shop and realize I've got no rear brake at all.

Reaches up under there and pulled this thing off. It was hanging by a thread.

Rode her home at the end of the day, pulled the rear wheel, and lo and behold, found this:

That piece I found broke right off the caliper support bracket. The inside pad was nowhere to be found. I'm guessing the lurch I experienced earlier was that thing getting bound up, then breaking free.

Doesn't look like anything got torn up except for the bracket. Anyone got one in the boneyard?

Wow, that coulda been ugly. Have to wonder what split the casting the now, good luck in the hunt. Check that rotor for run out, took a good hit when the pad left I suspect,

Got one? I think that will work.

According to the parts finder, 44034-86.

I think they used that through '99.

Mine doesn't have a part number cast into it. Only markings are these:

Here's what the whole thing looks like.

Beemervet, if that's what you've got, let me know. I'm interested. Thanks.

I wasn't paying attention and wrote about the caliper....

Ebay has plenty of mounting brackets, just go by the photos of the ad rather than part numbers.

Wow never saw that before, good thing it was from a stand still..
Did your brake rotor cut through that? I'd take a real good look at everything, including bearings..

Same thing happened to me a couple of years ago on the road. Had to do a roadside fix. That area of the bracket needs to be checked with each tire change. The pad will get loose and wear down that area where the shim sits and the aluminum eventually cracks. Unfortunately, many do not catch this until that area cracks. You can add an extra metal shim that comes with the new pad and this will make it fit tighter when the pad starts to get loose. By the looks of it, you could go cheap and JB weld yours, or find a take off on eBay. Good luck.
