Default Cam question

I've got a 1995 Fatboy with CV carburetor performance kit long shot exhaust no baffles s&s stealth air cleaner. Looking to go to stage 2. I'm planning to install EV 13 cam. Can I keep my stock ignition and replace the cam first?

You could put the baffles back and gain what a cam will give you... go to a Dyno, or the 1/4 track...see for yerself
Think what a Performance exhaust system will give you.
Stock Ignition, stock Pipes with Offroad S.E. Mufflers, S.E. CV carb, EV-27 Cam, My '93 Evo went 13's at 99MPH

Your stock ignition will work for as long as you want to save money. Your going to be restricted to stock red line of 5,200 but your not needing anymore then that anyway with that cam. Enjoy the quicker throttle response and the added passing quickness and just ride.

I have a stage 4 1999 fatboy, its lots of fun to show up some bigger cubic inch motors but cost a lot to get it there. With the bigger cubic inches out today it cost a lot to get the 80" to show up in a hard throttle up. Put your cam in and forget the ignition change.

But, I'm not sure if your ignition will plug into the Harley Q module but I recommend using it, I and my son in law use it. You can find them on Ebay used. They come out of the 1996 Sportster and a couple other years. It has a 6200 red line and won't advance at 4 grand more then the stock you have now, so it won't cause over heating issues running on long rides being advanced to far. Plus it has a slow advance giving a smooth acceleration and wards off ping when lugging, it's not advancing to fast. Its fully advanced at 4 grand just like the stock 80" module so it makes a perfect swap! It made a difference in both our bikes. I don't remember the part number just remember the Q on the module and 1996 sportster. Check the plugs to be sure they are the same for your year.

Here is the chart showing its advance. My son in laws bike when stage 1 at the time fought its self to cruise 80, after the change it cruised 90 effortlessly.

I wish I had the baffles they didn't come with the bike. Came across an 04 heritage OEM exhaust system going to try that see how much back pressure. It cost less than the baffles. Definitely going to research the ignition module sounds like a good thing.

I know they come in 1 3/4 and 2" I had them in my 1 3/4 drag pipes. They took the edge off but kept the nice sound.

On a FatBoy you would probably be better off with an EV27 vs the EV13. The EV13 is good on a heavier bagger.

I've been leaning towards the ev13 because I do a lot of two up riding never go down the interstates mostly rural or state highways. I don't have a tack but I'm pretty sure I don't do much high revving.

If you don't mind the fast ramps making a louder valve train noise , and plan on a compression bump to compliment the ev 27 later, it would be a nice choice. But if your going to bump the compression then use the ev 46 and really wake it up.

One of my brothers used the ev 27 in his bagger, and the noise from the fast ramps drove him nuts. If your not going to bump the compression the ev 13 will give you more bottom end grunt and a quieter valve train. And if your fatboy is geared like mine and turns 2 grand at 55 in 5th gear, and your not going to bump the compression, you will be very pleased with the ev 13.

I have the crane h-286-2b. It and the ev 38 have so close of specs. If I need a new cam, I'll use the ev 38. They both help keep the oil temps down from the longer exhaust duration. My son in laws friend has a newer softail with the 96" both bikes stage 1, the 96 blew him away. I put the h-286-2b in his bike, after asking him if he wanted, pass in 5th gear, or down shift to 4th to pass. He said down shift he wanted to pull harder up top to keep up with his friend. Now my son in law keeps up with him.

Lots of choices lots of advice, it's what you want. How do you ride. How do you want to ride,,,, how much do you want to spend.
