Default Recommendation on rocker box gaskets, 1997 EVO

I’ve got an oil leak between the rocker box and head on the rear cylinder.

I have a HD top end gasket kit (PN : 17040-92), these are 2006 vintage. The rocker box gaskets are the metal type.

Should I use the moco metal gaskets, or purchase a set of something else?

Stock gaskets lasted since 1997, should be good for another 23 years. I use MoCo for gaskets, good luck.

And make sure once you got it apart to check the flatness of the three pieces. If they are warped they need to be replaced.

You won't find a better gasket for the lower rocker housing than the OEM coated metal ones. Use them.

And that goes for the rocker cover rubber gaskets as well. OEM fits perfect every time. They're a tick thinner than most aftermarket and softer too, making them re-usuable more often than not (if they aren't terribly old)

Got the same kit part number a few months ago. Nary a leak to be found from the rocker boxes. I was skeptical also. Glad I did. 95% of my Evo leaks are sealed up. 1997 FXD.

I bitch at the MoCo for countless things but one thing they get right is gaskets... none better

I recently replaced my old `89 rocker boxes with new oem parts, about 2 months ago.

I would call the dealer again and make them work a bit to find you a set. Any year from 92 up will work.

The lower gaskets are metal, the upper gaskets appear to be Teflon or Delrin (white material), they are not like the old rubber gaskets that were sometimes so out of shape that they had to be gooped in place.

With the new gaskets this job is no longer a PITA.

I've ever only used Cometic gaskets. And never had an issue even with a stroked Evo.. lot of back pressure there in the case more so than in a stock Evo.. No problems..
