Felt engine cutting off and on and backfiring. Could start it back several times but then quit. Totally dead. Local tech said it was battery connection and tightened but did the same thing after riding 30 miles. 89 FLHS. I was thinking ignition switch or shorted wiring somewhere. Any ideas?
Why do you think its electrical?
To trouble shoot from a Fuel problem try loosening the fuel cap (vent hole clogged), other ideas, a collapsing fuel line (are they original?) , clog fuel filter (when did you last change it?) carb dirty and or needs a rebuild, bad gas.
Do you do your own work? I'd check connections sure, clean them all as well, but this sounds like fuel to me also. If you are worried it may be the battery, pull it and have it load tested. How often do you ride? Everyone knows our fuel is crap. Drain the tank and pull the petcock. Replace the fuel line to the carb. IF you have a filter, replace it. Put in new fuel. How's your air filter?
Did you do or change anything that may have caused an issue? Start checking one area at a time. If your going to do fuel, do fuel. If you are going to check electrical, check that as far as you can. Don't bounce all over the place. One thing at a time.
I had a similar situation, after checking the carburetor, the ignition, the coil, spark plugs, petcock and fuel line. Also checked for compression, that was good as well because the valves were closed. It turned out to be the pushrods went out of adjustment and progressively got worse on the rear cylinder and caused it to shut down my bike.

If it backfires through the exhaust, it means un-burnt fuel is igniting which would allude to losing spark intermittently. Coughing through the air filter would allude to lack of fuel.
Sounds like how my Vulcan 750 used to run when the battery died. I would stick with the electrical search. Check all your connections and use battery protector on your terminals.
Pull the nosecone cover and check for ignition pickup ooze
Check the Cam position sensor connector as well. They have a way of working loose. Clean it, put a bit of dielectric grease in there, and cross zip tie it together. Parts 58 - 59 below.
