I' talking to my builder about going back to a 3/4 belt and the Fat Baggers Wide Tire Kit now. They do not have a system that supports a chain drive but the guy I talked to over there said they are running their setup on bikes that are pushing 240 hp with the belt drive with no problems. He also strongly recommended going with the 180/55/18 Dunlop...said the 200's just are not designed to perform as well. This will probably add $2500 to the build...but at this point, I almost can guarantee you that this will be something I regret not doing, if I don't do it now.

You are in another budget / build realm and already running 150mm I was trying to explain to “ “hawg50” (and perhaps others) that 130mm is not the limit without a belt swap. Some brands of 140 will even fit without pulley spacers.

Sorry for the hijack

https://www.hdforums.com/forum/touri...aggers-30.html this is a good thread to follow

Seems odd they don't have the hardware to run a chain. I don't know if I buy the HP belt numbers.

Looking forward to seeing your build works out.

Yeah, I thought it odd too, but he said unless it's a dedicated drag bike that I'm going to be running at the track regularly, they'd go with the belt system.

I'm open to suggestions if folks know of anyone else who builds a quality/better wide rear tire kit???

Going to say it again, a soft compound Avon 150 will hold 140-150 hp and just didn't read about it, I experience it yearly. A slow speed throttle roll on is not going to blow the tire off a 900 lb Harley, a clutch dump will just like a 80 hp engine can.

If you trust a 3/4" belt and worried about a 150 tire, you better have AAA.

I understand where you are coming from. That said, there's no telling what I might do to this in the future (more HP), so I'd rather be set up for it now than to have to fix it later (a LOT cheaper). I run Avons too...and a soft clutch release and throttle roll do work. I get it. I also like to horse around on occasion...and catwalk my bagger...so I can be hard on it. I ride hard too, though usually with finesse.

Build Update for Those Interested:

1997 Road King Build
__________________________________________________ _____________

-New S&S 124" gloss black motor

-Baker OD6 Tranny

-D&D Boarzilla Ghost Pipe Exhaust with an all metal perforated baffle

-Rivera Primo Clutch

-Performance Machine 6 piston brakes all the way around

-Legend Front and Rear Suspension

-Baker Slimmed Down Hydraulic Side Cover

-Fat Baggers Wide Rear Tire Kit with upgraded swing arm, axle, Baker extended transmission shaft, etc, etc, etc (this fixes all the weak points of the earlier/stock frames and allows for a wider rear tire/fender)

-New 18" Flat Black Wheels (wider rear rim; replacing the 15's)

-New Wider Rear Tire (Dunlop 180/55B18) with front to match

-New custom wider rear fender

-Removal of factory luggage brackets; luggage will mount outside of the frame/fender, cleaning up the rear

-New removable rear luggage rack and back rest

-Jagg Thermostatic Oil Cooler

-Replacing factory rubber motor mounts with new polyurethane mounts

-3/4" High Performance Belt Drive

-True Track Swing Arm Pivot Anchor Stabilizing System

-New Baker Oil Pan (increases capacity by 1 quart)

-Frame and ALL chrome is being powder coated flat satin black

-New Custom Paint Job on fenders, tank, covers, fairing, bags and removable trunk (black/pearl with deep blue added to clear coat). The bike will be completely blacked out.

-New modern, super bright head light

-New modern 18" Apes

That's all I can think of, at the moment. That said, when she's done, the only left on the bike that will remain Harley Davidson is the frame, front fender, tank, forks, primary, and bags. Everything else is being replaced with high performance products. It'll still look like a Harley...it will just be 10 times the bike...and will handle better than the 2021 versions, with a WHOLE LOT MORE POWER.

How do you plan to address the “bagger wobble” prevalent in the pre-2009 frame?

I'm pretty sure the mods I'm getting from Fat Bagger, along with the True Track Stabilizer, harder motor mounts, and Legend Suspension will take care of that. Am I missing something??? If so, now would be the time to address it...
