Okay guys. 1988 FLHTC. Stock petcock , stock tank.
Here’s my mystery issue. From time to time my bike while running great with no issues at all will start to cut out like it is running out of gas. It’s not but it always happens at 1/4 on my fuel gauge. If it dies I can flip it over to reserve and fire it up. Runs great again. After 100 yards or so I can swap it back over to normal and run the rest of the tank. Last time I switched it before it died fully. Picked and ran , swapped back and ran fine.
I have pulled the petcock apart and cleaned it. Saw no issues with it.
Check the fuel cap. If you can stand to do it or use a hose to do it, suck thru the bottom hole in the center of the cap to make sure it's venting. If it's stuck or really hard to pull air thru with your mouth, replace it. Discontinued from dealer but a Stant 10646 is a high quality direct replacement. If it's good (or not), replace the crossover hose also.
Did you check the petcock screen? That age tank is getting about time the inner tank coating will start flaking off and partially block the screen.
I will order a new cap. The one on it seems ok but mighty old. Is that 10646 a vented cap? The crossover hose is new and yes I did clean the screen when I had the petcock out. Just seems strange that it always does it at a 1/4 tank of fuel. And it doesn’t do it every time. Crazy.

Yes, it's pressure/vent. Holds pressure in but lets air enter tank. Some "fast food" parts stores (Advance, AutoZone etc) still stock that number. If you can, take that one with you and be sure. I bought a new cap from a dealer years ago and it was identical to the Stant. They're only about 10.00 off the shelf. I'm all but totally certain that's the correct number, but can't find my notes so if I'm mistaken please do let us know.
Those flakes can vary in size from pin head to half dollar size. They only float when agitated and settle to the bottom after filling but will most always stick to the petcock screen enough to know something is wrong when you pull the screen out. That's assuming it's a factory screen. You may have something else going on, but I'd start with a cap since they can stick at times and not others. You can loosen them going down the road is another way to check for venting.... good luck.

your part number was right. Picked one up today at advance. I’ll if that fixes it. Thanks again.
