Default Volt gauge reading 10 volts

I have a 89 fltc. Just installed progressive cartridges in the forks getting rid of that air tube and the ground block. I took all
the black wires and split them to two separate grounds to the triple clamp and ran a new ground to the engine. Since doing this my volt gauge now shows 10 volts and goes up to about 12 when running. I’ve taken the grounds on and off trying to find a draw but nothing changes. The voltage at the battery is about 12.6 and goes to 13 when running. When I use a jump box song with the battery the gauge goes to 13. Any ideas of what could be going on? It was working correctly before the fork mod.

I've seen that before. It was one of the harness grounds that connected to the ground block. But you've removed that so I can't pinpoint your problem, but am 99% certain you've missed a ground wire. Also check behind the headlight bucket on the fairing. That's where some of the wires from the (now missing) block terminate.

Why or wherever, you're missing a harness ground.

Well. I went to the gauge itself. I’m getting only 10.6 on the orange wire with the other prong straight to the engine ground. So the gauge is working. I have 12.6 at the battery with the bike off.

Rats, I just deleted 3 nice paragraphs trying to do a correction. I'm pushed for time this morning so here's the abbreviated version; are the headlights brights? If yes, do the turn signals work? If no, check voltage at the ACC breaker on both sides. It's the one on the far left and has power in any switch position other than off or lock.

Other than lights, head and turn, there are 2 wires with power than go to the fairing - Acc switched, and 1 constant for the clock and radio. If the turn signals work the acc is getting good voltage but maybe not getting thru the forward harness.

Disconnect at the lower right of the fairing, find and check there for volts on the 2 hot wires. Again, if there's a deficient ground to the fairing gauges, they can feed thru themselves or their respective sender causing a parasitic effect on the other fairing gauge voltage. Like a short, but not a dead one. And the volt gauge is literally at the very end of the Acc circuit.

Like I said, I've seen this a number of times over the years, gauge shows 10.6 and it's always been a ground issue. Just depends on what else isn't acting right as to where it might be and where to look. Got to run.. good luck.

I don’t know what I did but I’m reading 11.2 at the wire going to the gauge with the switch on but bike not running. Gauge is still showing 10. Must be a bad gauge

My 97 Ultra always shows 10v when not running, new battery, no wires messed with. I think it may be "normal"

Those gauges are not accurate….but show just enough if you have an electronic issue.

Sounds like a bad ground or a wire has an issue.
