It's coming completely apart, get your head around that now and plan accordingly as it isn't going to be a cheap fix if things went that catastrophic inside. Busting the porcelain in the plug says something was rattling around in there, that will beat the **** out of everything including hammering the crank pin & bearings not to mention all the nasty that got blown into the crankcase, oil & oil pump.
Start deciding if the bikes worth it to you.
It's ABSOLUTELY worth it to me. And I have been kicking around the idea of an engine swap for a while. A V80 from S&S is looking pretty good. MAYBE even a 111.
So I said "hell with it" & bought an Ultima 113 at the recommendation of a guy who owns one. I'll bring the old Evo home to dismantle & learn with. Got a decent deal at Jirehcycles.com. I wanted to do an engine swap for a while, preferably WITHOUT wrecking the original.

I guess what I needed was a good excuse lol.
That is a great choice of engine. I know a guy who was in the same situation like yours, and that was his route, and he's been happy since. Good time to learn on the original engine. And now you have joined an elite group of folks who have blown an engine.

What's left? I would think the cases, crank, and cam should be good. Are 96 cases worth building on?

All speculation till it's opened, cases should ok if the studs didn't pull out or the breather port didn't get chewed up. Both are repairable. Metal has been loose in the engine, how bad is the only question right now.
Its always the last guy that worked on its fault...
That's a distinct possibility here! When I bought this ol' hog in 2019, I noticed the carb wasn't correct for a stock engine (this has an HSR42), and this bike was enjoyably strong at mid-high range revs. Long story short, when my repair guy popped the pushrod covers off, there were adjustables inside, which stands to reason there was other work done here.
My guess is the previous owner spent some dough on upgrades, and part of the job wasn't done very well & it failed. Because I've only put 10k miles on during my ownership. I haven't touched mechanicals whatsoever on this bike except a fresh belt, primary chain & stator kit.
