Where should the oil level be in the primary? Most other HDs I’ve owned have it filled to the bottom of the derby cover but looking in this one I don’t see much oil at all. It’s at the bottom of the chain tensioner shoe. Seems like there should be more in there. The chain is right at 5/8

Open the larger derby clutch cover.. I believe the level should just be up to the clutch basket.. maybe a 1/2 inch.. I don't have a mid control bike...

Bottom of the clutch basket with the bike upright is where most of us run it.

This noise, lifter? It's real hard to diagnose a noise over a text based forum. Inner cam bearing noise is said to travel. That is, it could sound like it comes from the other side of the bike.

I think I found it. I sat beside the bike and slowly rolled the throttle until it started making the noise. I noticed at about 2000 rpm the rear exhaust pipe started shaking. As I rolled it up to 2200 the noise started and the pipe was shaking like hell. I grabbed a pair of gloves and repeated the scenario then grabbed the pipe and the noise stopped. Gonna have to look into this a bit more to see if there’s anything to keep that pipe from shaking so much.

Woot. Found it. Probably a broken or loose bracket.

Funny how sounds an migrate from side to side on a bike. At first it sounded like primary then on occasion it sounded like it was coming from the right side. Once I pulled the bags off it was obviously from the right side. I guess the bags cause the sound to bounce back and forth.

Update- I checked all of the brackets and nothing is broken so I loosened all of the mounting hardware, thinking this would let the pipes "reset' their placement. I tightened everything back up and made sure all of the heat shield clamps were tight.
Went for a ride and it was all quiet... for a while. After another 10 or 15 miles the noise is back and the rear pipe is still shaking like a rattlesnakes tail at that 2200 to 2500 rpm range.
I'm thinking I might place a couple of thick washers between the rear pipe mounting bracket and the pipe it's self to stiffen things up back there but I'm open to any other suggestions that may help.

Might need some motor mounts. I'm not sure how the rear pipe mounts on your bike, and being aftermarket pipes, dunno, but if there is a crossover pipe like on a FLHT, that rear clamp can be kinda loose. A bit of time with a grinder on where the 2 parts of the clamp come together will tighten it up.

I finally figured out what that annoying rattle was. I took the whole exhaust apart all the way to the manifold. The rear pipe bolts were loose at the manifold so I tightened them up and put everything back together and no more rattle!
