I want to guess it's a stripped front pulley, but that's only a guess. Pull the top off the trans, pull the shift drum, slide it into 2 gears. That will lock the main drive gear - makes it easier to get the big nut off the pulley.

If the pulley is stripped, the gear set is coming out regardless to replace the main drive...

Sway bar removal? Did you mean swingarm? If yes, why?

Maybe that's the problem, his bike has a "Sway Bar"...

Yup it does not have a sway bar, lol. And at this point I think I'll take that bet on the issue being a stripped front pulley as well. Although I somewhat thought that even without removing it, it would be more obvious? But the symptoms match that diagnosis at this point.

Got the trans top and side covers off. Shift drum assy and forks are out. They seem straight without obvious wear. All seems ok to my novice eyes on first inspection. No obvious metal in oil. So seeing as I don't have the main shaft bearing race puller, I just ordered that and the 1 7/8" socket needed to get the pulley off for inspection. There goes another hundy. One way or the other as you guys have said, it all needs to come out.

Still curious on the false neutral issue I've had since I have owned this bike. The pulley wouldn't cause this. And from what I've seen thus far, I can't explain it. But as long as I am in this deep, should I replace the shifter cam and forks? Maybe update the spring?

That is if I don't find a more obvious issue in the gear set when pulled.

Take a good look at shifter pawl and how to properly adjust it. Since cover is off and drum/forks are out look at the gear dogs for anything ugly.
