Thanks Dr I was hoping you'd reply. That helps.
This one look like it goes to 2 case bolts. As stated, not looking for trouble removing case bolts - if it was the nut side that would be better for me.

I think I will use the one that mounts to the engine mount if there are no objections........
So much for my overthinking this grade one situation..
Thanks again.

Cool

If your bike didn't come with one, you probably dont need it. If you obsess about minutiae, then you may need one. I check mine for looseness when I change my oil. I have never had a problem. But maybe that's because I have a gremlin bell. You might want to get one for cheap insurance...

I could take a pic of the factory one on my bike if you're interested, but that's it. Wire thingie under the nut, presses down on the plug.

Always thought I was good at MacGyvering stuff, but I've had a headache for 24 hours trying to figure out how this style would mount

The one Hess showed is n/a from MoCo but available from all the usual suspects, +fleabay and NOS OEM can still be found. 45095-85

That case bolt only torques 15ft/lb so no worries about the removal but they need a flat washer under and another on top next to the hex. They will rotate as you torque so need to put it against the stater plug without the regulator boot on it, torque, then bend it outward to put the reg boot on, bend it back to position. You can bend them fairly easily for later removal etc, they won't break. They are by far the cleanest looking and easiest to clean around.

.

Uses two case studs, captures the plug in the middle. No chance of things vibrating off or coming lose. Copied a factory unit I saw at swap once.

My bike didn't have one (1985 FXRS). They weren't on new bikes until 1986. Sure enough...the day came when I absolutely needed one. The bike wouldn't start, and careful examination, testing, etc, etc...finally revealed that the damn thing was UNPLUGGED. Ordered the factory part..(#44-above), installed without ever worrying about pulling a case bolt, and never looked back. 37 years and over 300,000 mi. later ...never had another issue there.

Really?! 300k miles!
imo, the bigger concern is a loose connection with the resulting crispyness somewhere on the road...
