Again...Nope... look again... the Letter decodes the model Year... No Year number since 1979, which was Still Not a 2 number code, it is "H9", for a 1979
Racepres, I probably wasn't paying attention. Once you said model year clearly to me, and not registration, everything became crystal clear. It's an 84 which would validate my assumption that no 83's were EVO's. Doesn't matter what it's registered as.

82 and 83 were shovel engines, the first evos didn't come out in anything till mid year 84.

That has always been my opinion. I thought we were discussing a bike being registered possibly in the wrong year, or some crazy one off that was let out of the factory into wild. Which made no sense. Like you, I was there when the EVO's came to market. I took it hard from friends in 85 when I bought one. Lot's of them called it Jap Crap. Then I purchased one of the first SE carbs, ( which was just a big throat Keihin carb, cam, exhaust etc, and and the bike moved [pretty good for what it was and after awhile it died down.

No letters, only numbers. The decoding I posted above is for Evos. It is a separate number from the engine number.
Gotcha... belly numbers or Production numbers mean about zero to me if I have the Abbreviated VIN on the cases..

The first EVO came out in 1983 Im almost positive about this. It was a wide glide with flames on the tank with and EVO in a very limited number. I drove a truck and I always stopped at a Harley shop around Penn State to shoot the **** with the owner he had one a I was thinking about buying it sure with I did.

Yes and no. With production of the new model year starting in September at the HD factory, a bike could theoretically be made in September through December 1983 but stamped with an 1984 VIN. It could then theoretically get sold in say December 1983 so end up titled as a 1983 model yet have 1984 VIN. Whether HD ever released them for sale that early, I have no idea. Who knows what they did in 1983?
