Default Springer frontends

I bought a project Bike. 83 FXRS, AND yes it IS an 83, Evo motor, dry clutch.
Runs fine, really nimble compared to my 07 Ultra,
Was thinking of putting a Springer front-end on it. (has a leaky front tube anyway) I like the way they look.
BUT, I thought I'd ask if I'm making a mistake by doing this. Will I lose the nimbleness and agility?
Regards, And thanks
MG

You bought the bike a lot of guys will tell you is the best handling HD ever. Putting a springer front end on it is 100% for looks and will do nothing but negatively affect the handling of the bike.

Fix the fork seal leak, 2 beer job over the winter on a Sunday and enjoy the handling of your FXR. Good luck.

I'm with Architect, on this..
and... What is the VIN (minus the sequence Numbers) on that 1983 with an Evo??? Never even Heard of one Verified!!!
would be 1HD1EA-(or EB, or even EC) L (Not-K) XX D (not E nor beyond) XXXXXXX
Thank You
BTW I really do Like New Springers on Softails...and certainly the Old (mechanical brake) Springers on 4-speed Big Twins!!!!

Is it titled as an '83 ? If you decode the VIN (see below), it appears to be an '84. I'd be interested in knowing more about it being an '83. We see quite a few FXR's come through the shop and have not seen an '83 Evo before. If it truly is an '83 it would be a most foolish move to put a springer on that bike.

https://www.lowbrowcustoms.com/blogs...ZIVc%3D.NZv8v3

This VIN decoded 1HD1EBL33EY117635

1 The first digit represents where the bike was made. 1 = USA
HD The following HD represents Harley-Davidson.
1 The fourth digit represents the weight class. 1 = Heavy Weight, 4 = Light Weight, 8 = Sidecar.
EB The next two characters represent the model. (see Model Code Chart below). EB FXRS - FXR Sport
L The 7th digit represents the engine type (see Engine Codes Chart below). L 1340 Evolution
3 The 8th digit represents the introduction date. 1 = Regular, 2 =Mid-year, January, 3 = California Special, 4 = Daytona, March
3 The 9th digit is a check digit. If you don’t know what a check digit is, it is simply a digit to make sure the entire string is valid.
E The 10th digit is the year of manufacturer. E 1984
Y The 11th digit is the assembly plant the bike was made in. Y = York, PA, T = Tomahawk, J = Milwaukee, K = Kansas City.
117635 The 12th to 17th digits are the production numbers.

Love springers, had them on Flatheads to Softails, and it's your bike so you should do what you want. That is what makes the world interesting. But I would not put one on an FXR. And sorry, but unless that bike is a one off that the factory somehow built and let out into the wild, I would need to see some serious documentation that the EVO motor is factory stock in that bike.

If it is, great. We definitely know of 84 shovels, very common, almost recently bought one. And we know about the EVO mid 84 as well as the dry and wet clutches and 5 speed trans ( they are even in the 84 factory service manuals ) I jus never heard of or seen an EVO from the factory in 83, but I haven't seen everything either. The EVO design time goes back much further than 83 into the 70's so who knows. If it is, there can't be many. I still would like to see some research on the bike though. Good luck, its a good bike anyway, just think about that springer is all.

This, FXR is one of the best handling platforms HD ever made, slapping a springer on it would be like trying to mate a pogo stick with a slinky ride wise.

Wanna spend wise money go inverted frontend.
