Default Starting Problem

I have a 1987 FLHTC I have been having a start up issue for a while now. The only mod that has been done is an EV27 cam, S&S super E carb and slip on mufflers. The problem is I hit the starter button and the motor does not turn over but this does not happen all the time. I took off the derby cover and the drive gear comes out like it supposed to and hits the ring gear on the clutch but does not turn over the motor then I will hit the button a few times and the motor will crank over and start up. I pulled on the button cover and looks like there is no problem with the wires. The starter has been rebuilt and the battery is good. I even tryed to jump start it with my truck and the same thing. I have a good ground and all cables have been replaced. I know the starter is good due I have broken the pinion gear due to the motor not turning over. I will pull out the spark plugs and the motor will turn over like it is supposed to. I put a volt meter on the battery and hit the starter and it drops down 11.5 to 10 to volts. thingI was told that it could be a lifter bleeding down not letting the valve open up all the way causing this problem. What do ya think?

Thanks

Follow my destructions in the thread "click of death" and report back. However, in your case, I'm betting on the solenoid being worn out. You can also pull the rubber solenoid cover and jam something metal across the two big terminals (while pushing the start button) and it will start. Be careful not to touch anything else while you are shorting the two terminals together and have the bike in neutral.

I would go with a genuine HD solenoid, if you need to replace it. I bought an Accel chrome plated one from J&P and it was total crap and a complete waste of $50. I wound up repairing my original myself instead.

If it cranks well with the plugs out I'd say your battery is weak or your solenoid is old.
Have you tried cleaning upthe copper parts inside the solenoid to be sure all voltage is transfering through it?
11.5 volts may not be enough to get the job done.

I missed that part about the plugs out and it cranking. Humm. What's your compression? That is, with a compression tester. I have the same cam and carb, or a Super G, I forget.

I'd try this then:
Charge battery fully.
Push button.
If it doesn't crank, with the button pushed, short across the solenoid big terminals with the button pushed.
If it still doesn't crank, I'm thinking starter is weak at this point (shorted armateur?) or there is something weird with your motor (remote).

I'd try another battery. They have been known to go bad in aridiculously short amount of time.
I had one last 9 months. Everything else checks out, except 11.5v at the battery is a bit low.
