I also run Cycle Electric Regulator and stator, i believe they are a Mosfet Type but CE don't advertise them as such. The stock Harley is a shunt type regulator not as effective "Switch" as a Mosfet as the shunt type generates more heat in the switching process and heat = shorter life.
sounds like your going through more than you should though which as others have said may indicate other issues in the charging system. If you don't want to spend the money on a CE set up, i would still advise using a Mosfet type and there are suppliers out there that specifically advertise Mosfet type regulators for Harley classics.

In addition to what has already been mentioned, comp-u-fire make a nice regulator as well. Been running the same one for years. Voltage at 1000 rpm's has always been in the 14.2 to 14.5 range. Made in USA same as the cycle electric.
