I just bought a 1992 FXSTC Softail Custom about a week or so ago. I have the 1991-1992 Factory Parts Manual for 1340 Models and the Factory Service Manual for 1991 and 1992 Softails. The Parts book shows newer style roller bearings and the Service Manual shows old style Bearings, Races, and Seals. Looking at my 1992 Softail with 21" Laced Front and 16" Solid Cast Rear wheels, I can't tell what is in there, and don't want to tear it apart just to see. One of the manuals must be wrong. Does anyone know what wheels / bearings are on 1992 FXSTC Softail Customs came with?
My 1998 Dyna Wide Glide has 21" front and 16" rear laced wheels and has the older style Bearings, Races, and Seals in it.
ETA: FSM: 99482-92
Parts Manual: 99450-92

Reason: manual numbers
I would more likely trust the service manual. My 92 FXSTC has bearings that need to be repacked and seals replaced. So does my 97 Bad Boy. Unless your bike has had the wheels changed, it should be similar. You truly won't know until you tear into it. I also think that there are or were kits to switch to a lifetime grease bearing. Do you know the original owner??? I would check and make sure the spacer/bearing tolerance is correct if there was a switch. You can add or remove shims. The procedure should be in the manual.

Reason: Addl info
The BOOKS are different. I cannot tell by looking at the bike. Like I said I am not taking the wheels off just to see which book is right. I am hoping it has the Timken type tapered roller bearings like the service manual says it has.
ETA: Problem solved. The books use different wording; the bearing part number is the same as the older Timken tapered roller bearings with race, 9052. The picture is even different than the older parts manuals. That is really what confused me. All is well.

Well done - if we stare at something long enough it eventually tells us what we want to know! In fact it is no problem to remove the front wheel to check.
