'96+ swing arm mounting bracket came in and got everything secured to the frame. I also finally got the transmission side covers loctitited and torqued to spec. Still need to trim top cover and get that fully sealed up.
Working now on getting the rear end together, and first step is the caliper bracket. I got a wilwood GP310 rear caliper without even double checking the mounting hole distance. You need a new bracket to run these calipers, but they only make it for softtail models, so now need to figure out a new caliper mounting bracket. Rear brake master cylinder is rebuilt though. Pretty easy job, but I didn't realize how much pressure that spring was under and almost launched it into my eye when I got the snap ring off.
Threw the highway bars on too just so I can free up space in my garage. They wont get in the way of installing anything along the way so figured now was as good of a time as any for those.
Might be a dumb question, but do I need to expose bare metal for this ground cable?
I also took the triple tree off. Decided it was probably best to replace the bearings instead of just repacking them since I bought it used off a 20 year old bike. Problem is I can't seem to get that lower bearing removed. Manual says to get a chisel in there and basically pry it off, but I've had no luck. Going to take it to a local shop and have them do that, as well as compress the springs on the forks and get the caps screwed on for me since I don't have the tool for that.
As far as grounding that cable. Some guys rely on the threads of the bolt being enough of a contact and some would say scrape some paint off. Myself, I use a Dremel to remove just enough paint that will be hidden by the cable and then paint over the cable end with a heavy layer to keep oxygen from starting the rust process. Most people aren't as ridiculously **** about their connections as I am, fwiw.
I use star washers on all my grounds and positive connections, battery, starter, between regulator and frame and even the external grounding wire on the regulator..
Little by little. got the bearing and seals pressed into the inner primary and got that mounted up. Threw the outer cover on just for ***** and giggles to see how it looked, stoked with the gloss black finish.
