It's not so much as they don't work, especially high quality versions. I've even seen a video of a guy refilling them with high quality grease. At least not to me.
I'm about to turn 68 and have replaced several sealed bearing front assemblies on cars that are maintenance free, sealed units. I've also seen tapered bearings burned up by lack of maintenance, etc. What I have never seen are tapered bearings failing under properly maintained conditions and normal use. But I haven't seen everything. LoL.

I also did the Wilwood caliper upgrade a few years back on a 1996 heritage softail. Got the parts from Summit racing. Easy mod and worked out great.
