I like the Stock set-up with a Sportster "box"...easy, fast, reasonable performance boost...Cheap
Nothing wrong with the majority of Aftermarket stuff these days...except Price..
I still rely on the good ole Dyna-S, for Me. Tho Mechanical advance mechanisms are High Maintenance, and getting hard to find a Quality one!!
Both have a range of 4 selectable advance curves. The Ultima curves are more aggressive than the Dynatek curves (read higher chance of ping with the more aggressive curves). The actual modules look the same and have the same dip switch functions. Just different pre loaded curves.
You can find the instruction/installation manuals for both ignitions on the net and compare the curves. Dynatek offers a data cable for your PC and free software so you can program both the Dynatek OR the Ultima modules to a custom curve or one of the standard Dynatek curves. They both program the same way using "Curvemaker" software from Dynatek..
However, here is the rub: The cable form Dynatek is pricey. There used to be a guy that made and sold the cables for like 25 bucks but he stopped making them a year or two ago. I just checked Dynatek and I don't see a USB programming cable available, but maybe I missed it. I found the serial cable but not the USB type. Also just noticed....on the Dynatek website they show the 2000i ignition module "discontinued" so if you plan on getting one, your choices may be limited.
Twin Tec, I know nothing about it other than it works and has no Kickstart setting.
Like I've said many times, I've never touched a TwinTec and reading the install/setting sheet always gives me a headache. But here's a quote from the install instructions that apply to 2006-up modules.
"KICK START APPLICATIONS
Model 1005 units are preset at the factory with a
two revolution cranking delay that is optimum for
electric start applications. This cranking delay
precludes kick starting. Model 1005 units manufactured
starting January, 2006 can be programmed for kick
start mode. Twin Tec PC Link Evo software and USB
interface cable (P/N USB-INTF) are required to
program kick start mode. The mode switch can also be
used to select single fire kick start mode on revision
8.3 and higher"
So yeah, I guess can with a cable and program and can on early models and with a dial on the later ones according to this sheet... if the headache doesn't blind you.
