Yes that was it exactly.Charged the battery overnight, did a load test and all good.Put the battery in the bike properly and everything works.Thanks for the replies.much appreciated. One thing i dont quite understand about that solenoid button though...If i dont lock the forks when i park the bike,anybody could start it up and ride away.Is that correct?

Only if there is power to the ignition system. Used to be a thing in the old days to put a hidden switch on the low tension side of the coil so no spark.
That big red wire going to the starter motor is one side of the solenoid so when you push the button the circuit is completed and the motor runs.
The problem you found though is there is no safety if the bike is in gear.
