Default Help with starter problem

On my 97 XLH the starter is acting up. this condition only occurs after I have ran for a while and the bike is fully warmed up. I hit the starter and get a zinging, grind, bang sound that makes me think the whole thing is running backwards. When I let off the starter and hit it again every thing's fine and she starts right up. What the heck? I talked to a local indie and he said it could be ignition timing. Anyone had this problem?

Its hard to diagnose on here without seeing and hearing it but ignition timing could cause hard starting and kickback, especially if it only does it while its hot. It could just as easily be a starter problem though. Maybe your starter is going out and it isnt throwing out the starter gear correctly. Might also be caused by heat.

I think im getting ahead of myself though. First off what type of ignition are you running?

+1 on the timing. Best way is timing light. Sound like it is a little low. If it was high Would turnn very slow when hot.

The stock iginition consists of a pickup sensor located in the nosecone and a ignition box located farther back under the seat area. I would start by taking off the nosecone cover and checking the sensor plate. it should be a round plate with a rubber like square center. Look at it and see if it is melted at all. The earlier ignitions sometimes have a problem with the pickups. If it is melted in any way it is no good.

Speed Freak, What is the nosecone and what does look like? Would it be in the manual under that name?

Springer, I guess I will be getting a timing light. I really do like troubleshooting my bike. The whole idea of keeping her running tip top on my own is good for the soul. With the help of a few fellow riders of course.

Thanks

It is on the right side of the engine. Also serves as the cam cover. In your picture its the chrome cover towards the bottom right of your engine. If you look in the manual under ignition you will see it. You will see the round cover that is incorporated into the cam cover and should be riveted on if it is the stock cover or bolted on if it is aftermarket. Should say something like H-D on it.
