Yeah the compression releases took care of the starter grind/stalling problem. This time my negative battery post was melted from the cable loosening up. Plus I think the battery was just old and week. I've had the bike for 2 years and never put a battery in it so who knows how old it was. I ended up buying a battery from Harley because I needed to ride that night, starts great now but I'd still kinda like kick start just incase. But so far it looks like kick start is about $600 and I haven't found any exhaust that will work with it that I like.

keep in mind the 84 softail with the kicker is a 4 speed, yours is a 5 speed. still can be done, but can't be directly compared.

I don't think they made any "kick only" in 85, someone must have removed the electric start.

I am original owner of a 85 FXWG. Evo/4 speed/electric and kick start

Right on. My 84 has both kick and electric and it's a 4 speed. Realize that stock isn't too bad. I've got hi-compression and will tell you that if it kicks back get ready to go for a ride. As far as battery, as outlined above, you can't beat the Oddessey Glass Mat. Like having 2 stock batteries hooked together. As well it is totally maint. free adn you don't need to be tied to a charger sitting in the garage.

- perhaps better battery maintenance is better
than retro-fitting a kick-starter ?

Kick Start?

What are you....Young? I'm 57. The last thing I want to do is kick this friggin' 80 inch V-Twin to life.

That being said......Get yourself a good battery. Keep the grounds clean. And ALWAYS check that friggin' stator connection on the inner primary (what a POS design The MoCo 'engineers' came up with).

Oh...My 93 has a 2 year battery life span. Go over that...And you're looking for a tow. Ya can't even jump the bast@rds....

Thinking about doin the same thing with m 99 night train. Voltage Reg. took a dump, and left me to push startin. I'm guessing your estimate is a little low. Prior advice appears correct. I researched the add on, and talked with a buddy thats a bike wrench. Best combo I'v found is HI-4 Ign. Ultima kick Assy., & Hooker forbidden four into one pipes. Around $1,120.00 Plus UNCLE SAM. I have a call in to holley/hooker tech dept. to see if the pipes will clear the evokicker set-up. They havn't got back to me yet, but photos of pipe indicates they will clear. I have been holding off ordering pipes till I know fer sure, due $550.00 price. Good luck, and post, If ya get it together.

WIEVORIDER, look for pipes that will work with 'FXST 1984-99'

The first two years of the Softail (84 and 85) had a kicker and four speed tranny. IF they fit those years, you are good to go.
