Picked up a new H-pipe to replace the old tired one. Welded the old one best I could without taking it off and experimented a bit. Used an 1 1/2 inch short pipe, slotted with a grinder and drove it into the right pipe toplug offthe crossover. Loved the sound (out both pipes for a change) so now I'm considering true duals.
Has anyone converted to true dual exhaust and (honestly) noticed any increase in power, or more importantly, fuel mileage?
I recently added a Fullsac true dual conversion as part of a bunch of upgrades, so it's hard to say. The bike performs better in all regards than it did before, but that probably has more to do with the cam, lifters, shaved heads and carb upgrades than anything. I can say that it looks and sounds better with the true dual conversion, and the Fullsac kit was about the same price as a new H-pipe (mine had a cracked weld and needed replacing anyway).
I picked up my new H pipe for 68.00 off ebay and have tinkered with a cheap conversion fix as I mentioned. Is yours the "plug in the crossover" type, or a U-pipe replacement for the rear. (I'm not familiar with the type you mentioned. AND I've done only a few mild mods... how's your fuel mileage or have you had a chance to check it?
I've got barely 400 miles on my rebuild, and hadn't thought to check the mileage yet. The Fullsac conversion is a two piece kit that replaces the H-pipe completely: http://www.fullsac.com/truedual.html
I just went out to the garage and took a quick pic:
It won't give you enough back pressure, even when I put power cones in it. it was still lean and popping. I went back to the original set up and replaced the H bar pipe with a replacement.
I have a Fullsac kit on mine and am pleased with the results. Bike looks neater and sounds better, after minor adjustments.
I am so pleased with it that when I shortly fit a new S&S 107 I will be staying with true duals, but will probably have them custom made. I fitted the Fullsac kit to my old (1990) pipes, so the overall appearance is in need of a face-lift!
The stories of power and torque losses are probably due to using low back-pressure mufflers, which will have a similar bad affect on performance to drag pipes. I wasn't put off!
True Duals pop up frequently here, so do browse through the old records.
