Default oil pump

well ever since i had a bdl belt drive installed on my 90 fxstc i have had a small drip, or sometimes a couple, after a ride or if i let the bike sit for a couple week. i changed out the sprocket shaft seal 4 times now and used the seal installer to put each one on. also tried installing it both ways, for wet clutch and for dry clutch. i notice that my oil level will go down after sitting for a while so im figuring it the oil pump check ball. from what i have read it seems the best way to fix this is to remove the pump and lap the seat in using an old pushrod. what all do i need to watch out for when removing the pump and reinstalling it or installing a new pump. if ii decide to go with a new pump which would be as good as the original harley pump.

Before taking it apart, you may want to try a new spring first. If you do take it apart, keep track of the bolts, there different lengths. Removing and re-installing the snap ring on the rod that runs into the cam area, was a pain for me. Also if you take plastic vent gear off, make sure you re-install in samespot. If you take pump apart, mark the gear and watch for shims. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A SERVICE MANUAL BEFORE YOU START.

sounds good. now if i could only find a tool that would enable me to take the plug out. i have tried a good size screw driver bit mounted in a socket but can't get it out.

Use a screwdriver and a hammer. Tap the screwdriver into the end of the groove so it moves it counter clockwise. Don't worry about boogering the plug up. Then get yourself some of those hex head pump plugs so you don't have to go through this again.

thought about that but my concern is dislodging/ moving it, the pump and ending up with a bigger mess than i already have.

Any tool that I have seen that was successful, the blade was the same width and length as the slot in the plug. If ya can't make it, buy it. Either J&P or Jim's

Hate to tell you, but if the check ball is leaking that bad, you'd be no less than 2 quarts low (in the tank) before it'd get high enough in the crankcase to leak out that seal. Also, a bad oil pump shaft seal will let it leak into the block.

its not leaking that bad. its just for some reason it leaks from the seal. like i said i have installed at least 6 seals, both directions. the amount it leaks is almost nothing but the point is it shouldn't leak anything there. seeing as i have replaced the seal and spacer.
